"Old and Curious"

"If the pull of the outside world is strong, there is also a pull towards the human. The cat may disappear on its own errands, but sooner or later, it returns once again for a little while, to greet us with its own type of love.  Independent as they are, cats find more than pleasure in our company."

Hi, Friends.....

I temporarily have broken-away from my usual style of flowers and cuddly animals for this card that I am entering in the MFP Simple Salutations Challenge.   The theme this week is to draw inspiration from your favorite subject in school.  Well, I am a science person through and through and majored in biology (.....way back when they were still discovering that blood circulates!!!  Ha!) so I had to make a biology-related card, of course.

I have been just dying to make a weird anatomy kind of card because I found this wonderful old "doctor book" at a thrift store, that has personal significance to me.  I'll tell you more about that in a moment.

I ripped a page out of the book....that hurt, but that IS why I bought the book!....
and distressed it by tearing, rolling, creasing, stamping, sponging, etc.  I stamped (Stampendous - Vintage Frames) and heat embossed the frame in black.  Thought this sort of made it look like a bizarre portrait!

I covered the anatomical diagram with Ranger Crackle Accents and let it dry and crack.  Then I sponged Distress Ink (Vintage Photo) over it, misting it slightly, so the ink would seep into the cracks.

I inked and stamped on the back of the page so the curled parts would have continuity.

Do you see the cat watching you?  He's been lurking in my stash and is stamped with Simon Says Stamp - Khaki.

I stamped and heat embossed some gold spectacles in the corner and added my simple salutation of "Old and Curious" with Distress Ink (Walnut Stain) below the portrait.

Other supplies I used include:  DCWV Heirloom Stack paper, Hero Arts - Soft Vanilla inkpad, Hero Arts - Pattern Stripes background stamp (both of these HA products were prizes.  THANKS, HA!!!), and other stamps from my stash that were from weird thrift store grab bags....perfect for my card today!!  Ha.

My literary and antiquity-loving son is enthralled with the card.  He probably didn't know his old Mom was quite this deranged!....Or maybe he did.  (I asked him once what it was like having such a weird, nerdy mom.  He shrugged and said it was just regular to him. Hahaha!!!)  Well, usually, I am not quite so eccentric to want to make a card like this......but it was this old "doctor book" that did it to me......

I spied this humongous coverless tome at my local thrift store and immediately thought to myself.......Could it be?????......Is it
possible????  This monster is over 1100 pages of old good quality paper, so you can imagine how heavy the thing is!!

I pulled it off the shelf and opened it up to look for confirmation...  No book title headings on the tops of the pages and no way to tell the date, but the anatomical diagrams looked right......

Then the book opened to this interactive chart.
YES!!!!  I remember these!!!  I had in my hands a copy of an old book just like my Grandma had at her house when I was little.  I don't remember what the title was, but she always just called it the "doctor book".  I spent literally *hours* poring over the diagrams and charts.

This particular copy is missing the first 70 pages or so and two of the interactive charts, but I am so glad it, at least, has this one left.  Such amazing memories!!  I was totally thrilled at finding this book and the price was a whopping 80 cents!!! Yay!!!  We have THE BEST thrift store in existence!!! Thanks so much for indulging me my little story about this "old and curious" book!!

  2. OH MY GOSH!!! This card is over-the-top-creative and full of artsy goodness and detail. Not sure where to start with my favorite parts, but that "Doctor book" story had me enthralled! This image is the perfect base for your vintage (and, let's face it...kinda creepy...lol) design! The Crackle Accents give amazing texture and really accent all the facial musculature! The faint image of the cat took me awhile to find but gives yet another layer of interest. Love that you used some of your thrift store grab bag stamps on this too...go for it!! The gold embossed spectacles cap off a real masterpiece! I grew up with a set of encyclopedias that had transparent overlays of the human body as well as a couple of interactive pages and I wish I still had that set because I could go to town making art projects with the old pages. Or, more likely, I would never be able to tear a page out and they would just gather dust...sigh.

    1. Karen,
Thanks so much for all your wonderful comments on my card!! I totally agree that it is kind of creepy!! Ha.

Oh, I so know what you mean about bringing oneself to tear out the pages of old books. It goes completely against every fiber of my being because of how much I revere books, in general. It took a lot of determination for me to just do it.....but it helped that the first part of the book was missing, anyway. The encyclopedias you had growing up sound wonderful!! It's amazing how much influence something like that has on kids!!

    1. Quite a departure from my usual style, huh? Thanks for your comment. I really like your description of "deep". Sounds mysterious!! :) I'll probably have to do 20 cards of furry kittens and bunnies to cleanse my brain, now. Ha.

    1. Thank you, Karin!! I loved the effect the crackle accents gave it. I hadn't used that product before, so I wasn't sure what it would end up looking like. It was a gamble. But once I started applying them, I was pretty much committed. (Some might say making that card means I should be "committed"! Ha.)

  11. Well done on your paper find. Thanks for the lovely welcome. You might be surprised how much rabbits talk. Mine get quite vocal sometimes. LOL

    1. Wow....rabbits really are talkative??? I had no idea! They seem such silent docile creatures.......and unbelievably soft.

In my limited experience with rabbits, their fur puts most kitty coats to shame with the plushness. I have had cats with some amazingly soft coats that we call rabbit coats. Most cats aren't nearly as soft as bunnies, though, I don't think. But they do have better purrs. :)

      Thanks for your nice comment!!!
