Hi, Friends......
I am here with a pretty little card for Mrs. A's Butterfly Challenge where H is for Hinged Cards, the featured style. Being the lovely hostess that she is, Mrs. A has provided a wonderful tutorial for making this kind of card HERE. I didn't have a suitable fancy Spellbinders die to use, so I went simpler with a flower-shaped card base.
The main star of my card is my mixed media butterfly. I made this background sheet a long time ago with leftover Easter Egg dye and salt on mixed media paper. As the dyes dried the salt crystallized in fun patterns. But then what? How do I use it without the salt crystals flaking away? I tried some hair spray to set the crystals. That helped a little, but certainly didn't secure them completely.
Then I got digging around and found some acrylic gloss medium that I thought was worth a try. I very gently applied a generous layer of this over the top of the crystals with a foam brush and a thinner layer over the rest of the background. It worked great! Some of the crystals softened a bit and didn't entirely keep their distinct shapes, but for the most part I was very satisfied with the results.
H is also for Hexagon so I diecut a hex pattern into the butterfly. |
Seems that I often do not have a clear idea of what I want for my card to look like when I first venture out. So, after I had already adhered the doily and butterfly onto the card, I decided the lavender base needed something more. I had a swirly dot stencil from the Dollar Store. It is self-sticking and worked like a dream. (I wish all my stencils were self-sticking....so easy to use!!!) I lifted the edge of the doily and butterfly and slipped the stencil underneath and sponged some dots. I like how it turned out.
