Welcome to Day 5 of the
2017 CAT LOVERS HOP!!!

If you have a project to linkup, please go to the Main Hop Page
Also, please check out my
2017 Cat Lovers Hop Guidelines and FAQs

Hi, Friends.....

The magic of the Cat Lovers Hop continues.....

One of our part-time toms, Punch, showed up again to eat on our back porch platform. He's the one that looks soooooooo much like Judith (both have been missing since July). I looked at him face-to-face outside my kitchen window and STILL couldn't tell if it was Punch or Judith!! Well, I finally satisfied myself that it was Punch when I went outside and he just moved away to a more comfortable distance, instead of coming over to me. That's how alike they look!! Sheesh....it's just amazing. So glad to see "our" little Punch...who has filled out into a VERY handsome tomcat and is not so little, anymore! Still hoping Judith will show up again....the little wanderer! Drives me crazy.

I am so glad you are here to join in the daily festivities of the 2017 Cat Lovers Hop!! Each day I will be posting some fun things to see and do and win! A few of our sponsors will be in the spotlight each day.  I will feature the prizes they are offering and cards made with those products. My thanks to the sponsors and friends who kindly provided photos for me to use. It took a lot of pressure off of me!!  (Hey...I am ALL about that, right? :) )

Just a reminder.....ALL PROJECTS LINK UP ON THE MAIN HOP PAGE and I have my 2017 Cat Lovers Hop Guidelines and FAQs in a handy tab just under my header at the top of each page.

Okay on to the Day 5 festivities........

REMEMBER:  Ike's Show us Your Pussies - Cats Only Challenge theme this month is Furrything Goes + Optional MEOW-loween.  So if you make a Halloween-themed or ANY kitty creation for the Cat Hop, you can also link it up over there!!  Yay!!

A lucky participant in Today's Game will win one of the images from this newly designed digital prize from Ike's Art.  So much kitty fab-ness!!

I used Ike's fabulous "Hmmm...." digital kitty image for my card.  This image is the prize for one lucky Day 5 Daily Game participant.

I am feeling sad today because my sweet Shy-Cat is so feeble and nearing the end of her 9 lives. I colored this kitty as an orange tabby in homage to her. She's the one in my blog header. This doesn't really look like Chaienne (pronounced Shy-enn) but it was with her in mind. You might be able to tell that I made her tail with a slight bluish cast. This is true to life. We have always referred to her tail as being blue. It almost makes me wonder if she is actually a very pale calico....because of the very faint washed-out grayish/blue color of her tail. None of the rest of her coat is like that.

Day 5 Daily Game:  What are your favorite cat books?
(Thank you, D.Ann, for this game theme suggestion!)

I'll start.....

My Cat Bookshelf  :)
I got hooked on Lilian Jackson Braun's "The Cat Who...." mysteries years ago and have collected all the titles from thrift stores.  Love these cleverly written books.  They are my all-time favorite cat mysteries!!

After I finished that series, I started looking around for other Cat Mystery series.  Here are my favorites:  The Mrs. Murphy series by Rita Mae Brown and Sneaky Pie Brown (her cat!), The Midnight Louie series by Carole Nelson Douglas, and the Death on Demand series by Carolyn Hart.  All of these are in the cozy mystery genre (Read: What makes a cozy?) which I love.  :)

Here are a few links with other Cat Mystery suggestions:
https://www.goodreads.com/shelf/show/cat-mystery
http://cozy-mysteries-unlimited.com/cat-list
https://www.cozy-mystery.com/blog/favorite-cats-in-cozy-mysteries.html

I also want to mention Henry Beard, an author with utterly charming and hilarious cat books:
French For Cats - All the French Your Cat Will Ever Need
Advanced French for Exceptional Cats
He has others, too, but these are the only ones I have.

As far as children's literature goes, my very favorite cat stories are:
Skippyjon Jones series (this is where our Skippyjon got his name)
The Fire Cat

This is how to play the game to be eligible for the prize drawing:

1.  Leave a comment telling us about your favorite cat books.
2.  After you finish your Cat Books comment, fill out your (own) name in the link up below.  This doesn't have any thumbnails so no photo needed!  You don't even need a blog!!!  This is for everyone!!!  I will draw the random winner from the link up, so don't forget to do that part if you want to be eligible!

NEW THIS YEAR: The Daily Game link ups will be open the entire duration of the Hop, including the extra day for comments. Entries need to be in by 11:59 pm Pacific, Sunday Oct. 29, 2017 to be eligible for the daily prize. So you have more than just today to comment and link up. I realize that not everyone has access to a printer or likes to use digis, so I am still keeping the link up gadget to make sure the digi prizes go to winners who can use them. But I am hoping EVERYONE will participate in answering the questions whether they are putting their name in for the prize or not.

Okay, now it is your turn!!
REMEMBER: Link your cat-themed projects over on the Main Hop Page. This link-up below is just to enter the drawing for the Daily Game after you have commented with your Kitty Book Comment. Thanks!!!

Thank you, everyone, for participating in the Daily Games with your cat tales.   I really enjoy reading about your cats!!  Hard to believe the week is nearly over!!!

  1. Another day jam packed with fabulous sponsors! Thanks to all!! I'd be flabbergasted to win any of these!!

Oh, I LOVE The Cat Who series! I think all age groups do! I recently loaned my set to my newly widowed 90-year-old aunt and she loves them, too. (I think she has a little crush on Quill!)

I also love several non-fiction series: Cleveland Amory's tales about his Polar Bear, Peter Gethers stories about Norton, his Scottish Fold, James Herriot's Cat Stories, and the books about Dewey the Library Cat are the first ones that come to mind. Only problem is the endings are tear jerkers, as all cat endings are.

A different type of non-fiction book I enjoyed was Why Cats Paint. After that, I always gave my kitties a turn at playing with some paint, but none of them were impressed. Lol!

As for poetry, none can compare to Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats by T.S. Eliot!

Then there are comic books I loved as a kid and still do: Calvin & Hobbes and Garfield among the top favs.
Every time I'm about to finish this comment, I remember another, I'll likely be back with more. 😉

    1. I (or my son) have almost all of the books you mention. Those are fabulous selections. LOL @ your dear Auntie's "crush"!!! :D :D :D

RE: Why Cats Paint. I still can't figure out if the entire book is supposed to be one big rough-pink-tongue-in-cheek joke or if the author is serious!! Ha.

Old Possum's is a fabulous classic, too, and so charming.

Thanks for reminding me of these others!!

  3. Fabulous card :-)
I have never heard of those 'The Cat Who.. books !! I loved The Cat In The Hat when I was young.
My favourite cat story was about a little boy who had an accident or something and came back/thought he was a fluffy white cat. I can't remember what it was called nor who wrote it unfortunately :-( Does anyone know ???

  4. Ahh, again such fabulous sponsors. Need to stop drooling. Sending love and gentle hugs to you and Chaienne. Lovely homage to her, Janis. Have to say my fave cat book is "I Could Pee on This". Cat poetry compiled by Francesco Marcuiliano. I laugh so hard, I cry! xxD dlmundinger(at)yahoo(dot)com USA

  5. Love your card and your coloring of the sweet kitty image! Funny that when I was reading your post, the first thing that came to mind was "The Cat Who..." series even before I read your mention of those books! My friend Jan Fox got me started on those many years ago, and I have a good collection of them also! I have read a couple of the Rita Mae Brown books also, and really liked those. I'll have to look and see if I can fund more of them!

  6. I very much enjoyed The Cat Who... series and often thought about counting cat whiskers because cats with X amount of whiskers were supposed to be exceptional. Hmmm.... maybe that is why Cindy chews off Charles' whiskers--she doesn't want him to smarter than her. I enjoyed the books about Norton. I have unread books about Homer the blind cat and Dewey the library cat. I don't really like to read cat books because they always die at the end. The cat book that I often think about is Moshie Cat which I read as a kid. I think that was my first exposure to cat books (beyond the cat and the hat).

  7. Well, I confess I don't really read cat book "stories", but I have trillions of books on cats; their health, behavior, what to do in an emergency, etc. Unfortunately, they are all still packed away so I don't have then here & can't recall any of the names!

  8. My favorite cat book was Dewey The Library Cat. A Must read for all cat lovers.

  9. I love a silly take off on old children's nursery rhymes called "Bedtime Stories for Your Puss." It's silly and filled with humor, and I got my copy from another cat lady friend who fell in love with one of my fur babies many years ago and that started her on a lifetime of cat collecting. :-D

  10. I love that Brutus Monroe stamp set (I actually have that one). As for cat books, I don't actually have any cat mysteries... but I will be checking those tittles out. When my son was little he loved the Splat the Cat books, I probably still have them somewhere.

  11. I like the cat books by Zebra Regency Romance. The ones I have read have several romantic stories in each book. A cat or kittens are always in the story line. They are very light reading, and sometimes I just want something that is not serious and just entertaining to enjoy; relaxes my mind. They don't have vulgarity, bad language or anything negative, and are just whimsical stories. Right now I am on the book Summer Kittens; although, I have to confess, that it was been weeks since I've read on it; I may have to start it over, as I've forgotten what I read. I've read Mistletoe Kittens and I believe I read Winter Kittens. They were fun reads.

  12. My Christmas read for last year was a secondhand book I picked up 'The Cat Who came for Christmas' and I loved it... this story was so similar to my Blackie's, it resonated with my soul. ANd today - my daughter after going to a book fair picked up 'THe Cat Who came for Christmas #2! I couldn't believe it! Soooo that is my Christmas read for this year :)
Fantastic Stamps and sponsors cards... so much to love!! WOW! mandysea1 at yahoo dot com

  14. I LOVE to read and always have a book close at hand but I don't have any favorite "cat" books. (I know "gasp"....) I like historical fiction, literary fiction, good non-fiction, etc. So hope you don't throw me "out" for not having any favorite "kitty" books. ;)

  15. Oh, I'm in trouble now because those cat prizes are calling my name and I may need to break down and get the Laurel Burch and Kitty Stacks stamps set now...sigh. As for cat themed books, I discovered the Lillian Jackson Braun Cat Who books years ago and was thoroughly charmed by them. I admit to a weakness for cozy mysteries myself, which I read before falling asleep...and a cat or two thrown in never hurts! Thinking of you and sweet Shy Cat and I know that losing our little furry ones is never easy.

  16. I just love one very beautiful and fun kids book named Maček Muri (cat Muri in English), I often read it to my daughters. I have one book with all breeds of cats too.

  17. My current favourites are the cat-themed books in the Chicken Soup for the Soul series. I have two of them. I'm also reading 3-Minute Devotions for the Cat Lover's Heart. I also have a cute collection of children's cat books that I purchased at various thrift stores over the years (very cheap!). I enjoyed reading the fun, light-hearted stories, but I really bought them for the pictures! I have another bunch of cat books that I bought when I first became a cat owner, but they are boxed up so I haven't looked at them in a while, mostly non-fiction. Thanks for a great hop, Janis, I really enjoyed myself!
